Plus Size Workout Clothes

Friday, November 5th, 2010

I am a plus size woman and I work out. If you’re surprised to read that plus size women can also live active lifestyles, then this article might not be for you! But if you are a plus size woman who does hit the gym, or would like to, then I’ve got a few pointers on what to wear.

Brought to you by Beso.com

When I first started going to the gym several years ago to get more toned, I was very insecure about my figure and the fact that I was larger than a lot of my fellow gym goers. I used to wear huge oversized t-shirts and sweatpants to hide my body. But it’s sort of hot and uncomfortable to wear clothing like that. These days, I may not be rocking a sports bra and bike shorts to work out in, but I definitely wear more fitted, flattering gym clothes.

Number one most important gym garment for a plus size woman is a sports bra! Most plus girls are blessed with larger than average busts, and they will need support when you do your cardio! JustMySize.com carries a large selection of plus size sports bras in all shapes and configurations.

Another incredibly important part of your gym outfit is a great pair of sneakers. I am very loyal to New Balance shoes; they gave great arch support to my very flat feet and make walking and running quite comfortable.

Now that we’ve covered support for your feet and chest, now we’ve got to talk clothes. I recommend a cotton tee and a pair of moisture wicking pants. I wear a legging with a boot cut bottom, so it’s fitted but has a bit of a flare for style.

Buying a Plus Size Bathing Suit Online

Plus Size Tankini

No woman I know likes shopping for bathing suits.  This is not just limited to my plus size friends; I know my skinny girlfriends dread it just as much.  The terrible lights in the dressing rooms, the three way mirrors that somehow show your absolute worst angles… the whole experience just stinks.

What I like to do is shop for my bathing suits online.   There are lots of websites that sell suits for plus size women.  You can order a few, try them on, and choose the one (or two or three!) that is right for you.

Here are a few things to think about when shopping for a plus size swim suit.

Cup Support: If you are a plus size woman, there’s a decent chance you have an ample chest.  If you require a lot of support in your every day bra to look perky, you need to find a suit that can do the same for you.  Make sure the cups are underwire, and the straps are thick enough so they don’t dig into your shoulders.  Halter suits are very pretty and can support an ample chest, but they will transfer all the weight to your neck, so keep that in mind.

Color Story: I feel more comfortable wearing a short swim skirt over my suit, or buying a suit with a cute skirt bottom.  I also tend to wear cover ups or sarongs when not in the water because my skin is so fair.  Because of this, I try to buy all my suits for the season in one color story.  If I get a black swim skirt, I don’t want to buy a navy and white bathing suit that won’t go with it.

Mix & Match: Many plus size women are not shaped the same from top to bottom.  Some women are heavier on bottom, others heavier on top.  Tankinis & bikinis with mix and match separates are a great solution.  You could buy your top in a 1x and your bottom in a 2x, or vice versa.  Some companies even sell their tops by bra size, so you can get just the right fit you’re looking for.

Designer Profile: Michael Kors Plus Sizes

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

As any good Project Runway fan knows, Michael Kors is a top American designer. He’s been designing gorgeous, classic clothing for women since the early 1980’s.  What many plus size women don’t realize is that Michael Kors also designs plus size women’s clothes under his MICHAEL Michael Kors label.

The line of clothes, sold at Macys and Bloomingdales, is a similar aesthetic to what you see in his straight sized women’s line.  The current pieces you can shop for online include jeans, dresses and blouses.  Current trends like animal print, polka dots and asymmetrical necklines appear in the line and prices are moderate, on average under $50-100 per piece.

Can you wear Horizontal Stripes in Plus Size?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I get asked a lot by plus size women about whether they should wear a certain trend or style.  Although there are rare instances where I just don’t think a trend will translate to plus size, almost any look can be adapted for larger sizes.

This includes horizontal stripes, previously concerned a no-no for plus women.  The common thinking is that stripes going across your body will make you look wider, and in some cases they absolutely will.  But like any look, the trick is to pick out a version of it that will best flatter your body type.

For instance, apple shaped plus women are much heavier on top than on bottom.  Take advantage of the narrow real estate in your hips and thighs by wearing a horizontal stripe skirt.  It will create some width that you can use to balance out your top half.

If you’re lacking in the bust area, some stripes across your chest can add volume there.  Similarly, stripes that wrap around an hourglass waist will show off the smallest part of your body.  Just like any pattern, I don’t recommend wrapping stripes around your widest area, or cutting off at the top or bottom of your broadest part.  But worn right, this look can be very cute, and will enable you to rock the nautical stripe look so popular this season!
