How To Wear Print Dresses

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Thank goodness for summer! One thing I love to wear in warmer weather is tons of colorful print dresses. The key to wearing prints is mixing and matching your accessories just right so you don’t overwhelm your look. Print dresses are especially perfect in the spring and summer, and I’ve chosen four styles to show you how to wear!

A printed maxi dress looks great with chunky wedge sandals, for a bohemian vibe. Paired with some large hoop earrings, oversized sunglasses and a tote bag, you’re ready for the beach or just a lazy Sunday stroll around your city.

The cocktail dress gets cute with a solid jewel-tone bodice and contrast print skirt. This dress can be paired with some funky, colorful stilettos and a bright satin clutch. In this instance, go bright or go home!

Perfect for the office, this print dress is both playful and practical. The blue python print lends a unique touch to corporate wear, yet the sleek silhouette says you’re all business.

Middle Eastern Clothing Inspiration

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

After watching my favorite fashionistas on the big screen in the opening of Sex & the City 2, I’ve become enthralled with their middle eastern clothing inspirations. Vibrant colors, silks and jewel embellishments – oh so pretty! In the film, most of the looks are a bit over-the-top, and not so practical for most of us to wear. So, for those who like the style but aren’t as daring as Carrie Bradshaw, I’ve chosen a few pieces that anyone could pull off.

Topshop Petite Floral Bandeau Dress, $70.00 at Topshop

Where do I shop when all else fails where I’m assured to find some fantastic, stylish clothing? Topshop of course. I was first turned on to the British high street shop when I lived in England. My English boyfriend described them as a stylish and edgy Banana Republic, but a bit more cutting edge than any US mainstream store. If you’re not familiar with Topshop, check them out. Here are a few recent finds from over the pond:

Topshop Tulle Hem Trench Coat, $160.00 at Topshop

Topshop Classic Aviators, $24.00 at Topshop

Paige Buckle Wedges, $180.00 at Topshop

Halston Heritage Tiered Pleated Silk-chiffon Dress, $435.00 at net-a-porter

I knew the movie was going to be fantastic when in the opening scene Carrie Bradshaw steps onto the streets of New York in her super fabulous Christian Louboutin Glitter Pumps. Just spectacular! The movie was great as expected and kept me captivated to see what amazing outfits the girls would wear next. Much of the fashion was a bit over the top, but it is Hollywood after all. I’ve put together a few statement pieces inspired from the flick for all you style conscious ladies. Let me know your favorites!

Emilio Pucci Printed Mini Kaftan, $760.00 at net-a-porter

Never have I had so many printed pieces in my wardrobe! On each shopping trip lately, I’ve come home with some amazing prints. Everything printed from summer dresses, skirts to tanks. The designers have really outdone themselves lately and have given us some wonderful fresh prints. Animal prints are especially hot and so are painterly and geometric block prints. Color is key too. I tend to flock towards bold, bright prints for summer, but I also can’t get enough of neutrals and metallics. Below are some of my great print finds:

Victoria's Secret Sweater Dress

You don’t have to sacrifice style for warmth. Pull on a cuddly sweaterdress and stay warm and sexy. Shorter dresses look perfect paired with leggings (denim leggings too) while longer styles look great with colorful tights or bare legs and tall boots. Victoria’s Secret, one of our favorites for sexy intimates, offers some affordable and cute styles ranging in price from $39 to $119.  Work appropriate and great for weekends in, we promise you’ll be so comfy you’ll never even think of that “blanket with sleeves” ever again.

Spring dress fever – Alexander McQueen

Friday, May 16th, 2008

And now the last spring dress fever week pick, but most certainly not the least… {drumroll} – Alexander McQueen. Speechless was my first reaction when I saw his Spring 2008 Collection. If you can find words to do justice to this piece, then drop me a line. I am still hypnotized by the magic. I adore and salute his use of feathers in the front versus the back, which usually propels angelic reference. The use of materials and colors is exquisite. If I could only afford it, I would wear it in a heartbeat.

Spring dress fever – Yohji Yamamoto

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Gotta love Yohji for being so out there! Wait, there is a word for that: avant-garde. It was hard for me to choose only one of his dresses, if you can even call them that. They are more unique draped creations. I love his asymmetry, color combinations and the abundance of beautiful fabric. It’s wearable art, is what it truly is.

Spring dress fever – Yves Saint Laurent

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Yves Saint Laurent has been the paragon of class, elegance and simplicity since the beginning. This mod inspired dress is no surprise, but a confirmation of “less is more”. Yet, simplicity is sometimes harder to achieve than we think. We tend to either overkill with jewelry or understate with flats. Stripped of superfluous accessories, this look is so clean and fresh that it needs little else. Let your glowing skin get all the attention this spring!

Spring dress fever – Diane Von Furstenberg

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Uh, this dress is just what the doctor ordered this spring! The over-sized loose casual cut creates a comfort quality and the open neck is revealing enough to feel sexy. Green is one of my favorite colors and this shade is very soothing. Thank you, Diane Von Furstenberg, for a beautiful spring dress… that I just might have to splurge on.
